Hibernation Motel

Are we headed for a word where we can sleep our troubles away (or at the very least make long trips seem less tedious). The next time you’re planning on traveling to the moon, imagine sleeping the days away in your very own gas induced hibernation. Mark Roth of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA discovered a way to induce hibernation in mice. They’re calling this suspended animation which, in theory, this might be a mechanism for slowing cancer growth in patients to buy more time for treatments and cures. I’m betting it becomes the designer drug equivalent of those anti-narcolepsy amphetamines that have the side effect of wakefulness. Now, when you’re unemployed because your job was outsourced to Lichtenstein, instead of moping on the couch in front of Buffy reruns, you can sleep your troubles away with gas-induced hibernation. It cuts down on energy consumption, beer drinking and food that would go straight to your midsection making it a win for everyone. I think I’ll go take a nap.
